Uthe Investigations & Process Service

Licensed Private Investigation Agency Advantage in Illinois

Why the Agency Behind Your Process Server Matters

When an attorney hires a process service provider, the person knocking on the door is only part of the equation. The agency responsible for the assignment matters too.

Professional process service requires field judgment, accurate documentation, responsive communication, and proper authority. Difficult assignments may also require investigative resources before service can move forward.

Uthe Investigations & Process Service LLC combines those capabilities within a Licensed Illinois Private Detective Agency.

Since 1994, we have provided professional process service and investigative support for attorneys, businesses, landlords, insurance professionals, government agencies, and private clients throughout Illinois.

Our clients receive more than document delivery. They receive professional agency oversight from assignment through completion.

Illinois Law Recognizes Private Detective Authority for Process Service

Illinois law specifically recognizes qualifying private detective professionals within its process service framework.

Under 735 ILCS 5/2-202, process in any Illinois county may be served without special appointment by a person licensed or registered as a private detective under the applicable Illinois licensing Act. Registered employees of a certified private detective agency are also included.

The statute separately permits a court, upon motion and in its discretion, to authorize a private person over 18 who is not a party to the action to serve process.

These are different sources of authority.

For attorneys, understanding that distinction can be important before assigning legal documents for service.

Not Every Company Advertising Illinois Process Service Has the Same Authority

A professional website or advertisement does not establish the authority of the person who will actually perform service.

Illinois recognizes different methods through which a person may have authority to serve process. Therefore, attorneys should know who will handle the assignment and under what authority that individual will act.

Before selecting a provider, learn more about Illinois Process Service Authority and the different sources of authority recognized under Illinois law.

A PERC Is Not a Private Detective Agency License

A Permanent Employee Registration Card, commonly called a PERC, plays an important role within Illinois’ regulated private detective industry.

However, a PERC should not be confused with a Private Detective Agency license.

Registered employees work within the regulated agency structure. Illinois also requires registered private detective agency employees to complete at least 20 hours of basic training within 30 days of employment. Beginning with the following calendar year, they must complete at least eight hours of annual training related to their work.

For attorneys evaluating a process service provider, the distinction matters.

The credential held by an individual field worker and the professional authority of the agency responsible for the assignment are separate considerations.

Learn more about the difference between an Illinois PERC Card and a Private Investigator License.

Court Appointment and Licensed Agency Authority Are Different

Court appointment is another source of process service authority in Illinois.

Under Section 2-202, a court may authorize a private person over 18 who is not a party to the case to serve process. The statute separately grants statewide authority without special appointment to qualifying private detective personnel.

One method depends upon authority granted by the court.

The other arises from the statutory authority provided to qualifying licensed or registered private detective personnel.

Learn more about when an Illinois Court-Appointed Special Process Server may be required.

Professional Agency Oversight Matters

Attorneys should not have to manage the process server.

At Uthe Investigations & Process Service LLC, our agency manages the assignment from document submission through completion.

We coordinate field activity. We monitor service attempts. We communicate status information. We evaluate problems as they develop. Finally, we prepare appropriate documentation when the assignment is completed.

This structure provides clients with a clear point of professional responsibility.

It also becomes especially important when an assignment stops being routine.

The Investigative Advantage When an Address Fails

Consider a common process service problem.

The process server arrives at the supplied address and learns that the defendant moved months ago.

A routine attempt can establish that the address failed. However, the attorney still has the same problem:

Where is the defendant now?

This is where a Licensed Illinois Private Detective Agency provides an important practical advantage.

Uthe Investigations & Process Service can evaluate whether professional investigative resources may help develop additional information. Depending on the circumstances, those resources may include skip tracing, address research, public-record research, background investigation, digital research, or other lawful investigative methods.

Instead of repeatedly attempting a bad address, we can determine whether another strategy makes sense.

Process Service Backed by Investigation

Not every unsuccessful process service assignment requires an investigation.

However, when additional resources can provide meaningful value, Uthe Investigations & Process Service has them available.

Alias Buster™

Alias Buster™ is designed for assignments where the address provided for service may no longer be valid.

When appropriate, investigative research can help develop a current address so the process service assignment can continue.

Skip-to-Serve™

Skip-to-Serve™ combines professional locating resources with process service when the defendant’s current location needs to be developed before service can move forward.

Maximum Serve™

Maximum Serve™ is designed for difficult assignments that require greater planning, effort, and professional judgment.

Maximum Experience. Maximum Effort. For Your Most Difficult Assignments.

These services reflect the advantage of having process service and investigative capabilities available through one professional agency.

Experience Helps Determine the Next Step

Experience becomes particularly valuable when the original plan stops working.

An address may be outdated. A defendant may have relocated. Building access may be restricted. Information supplied by occupants may conflict with existing records.

Simply repeating the same attempt does not always produce a different result.

Our team evaluates the information developed in the field. We can then adjust the strategy when circumstances justify doing so.

That approach helps attorneys avoid unnecessary delays and provides a more practical path forward.

Better Documentation Helps Protect the Case

Process service can later become an evidentiary issue.

A defendant may dispute where service occurred. Someone may challenge the identity of the person served. Abode service may be questioned. In other cases, the authority of the person performing service may become relevant.

For that reason, accurate field documentation matters.

Our field personnel document what occurred during the assignment. Uthe Investigations & Process Service maintains professional oversight and prepares the appropriate service documentation based upon the information developed in the field.

Good process service should be handled with the expectation that someone may eventually examine how it was completed.

When Service Is Challenged

Even properly completed service can be challenged.

Questions may involve the method of service, the location, the identity of the person served, the defendant’s residence, or the authority of the individual who performed service.

Professional documentation helps counsel evaluate those issues if a challenge develops.

Learn more about a Motion to Quash Service in Illinois and why proper service and documentation matter.

One Agency for Process Service and Investigative Support

The Licensed Private Investigation Agency Advantage extends beyond licensing.

It provides attorneys with access to complementary services through one professional agency.

A matter may begin as routine process service. Later, the address may fail. The defendant may become difficult to locate. New information may require verification. An investigation may develop a better service location.

Instead of moving the assignment among unrelated vendors, Uthe Investigations & Process Service can evaluate the problem and determine whether appropriate investigative resources can help.

Investigate. Locate. Serve. Document.

Professional Training and Accountability

Professional process service requires more than sending someone into the field with legal documents.

Illinois requires registered employees of private detective agencies to complete basic training related to their work. The law also requires ongoing annual training. Employers are responsible for certifying and maintaining records of that training.

Training does not replace experience. However, a regulated professional structure establishes standards that do not exist merely because someone advertises process service.

For attorneys, that structure provides another layer of accountability behind the field assignment.

Why Attorneys Choose Uthe Investigations & Process Service

Since 1994, Uthe Investigations & Process Service LLC has combined professional investigation with process service.

Our clients receive experienced field service backed by agency oversight, modern electronic case management, professional documentation, responsive communication, and investigative resources when appropriate.

Routine assignments receive professional attention.

Difficult assignments receive strategy.

When circumstances change, we have the investigative experience to evaluate the next step.

Most importantly, attorneys know which professional agency stands behind the work.

Not Every Illinois Process Service Provider Has the Same Authority

A website can advertise process service.

An advertisement can say “Illinois process server.”

Neither statement, by itself, establishes the legal authority under which the person performing service will act.

Illinois law recognizes several sources of authority for serving process. Those include sheriffs, qualifying private detective personnel, and eligible private individuals whom a court authorizes upon motion.

Attorneys should therefore ask:

Who will actually serve my documents?

What authority does that individual have?

What agency is responsible for the assignment?

Those are reasonable questions before legal documents enter the field.

Learn more about Illinois Process Service Authority and the different sources of authority recognized under Illinois law.

Make Illinois Process Service Authority the internal link to the authority page we strengthened today.

Court Appointment and Licensed Agency Authority Are Different

A court-appointed special process server and qualifying private detective personnel derive their authority differently.

Section 2-202 allows a court, in its discretion and upon motion, to authorize a private person over 18 who is not a party to the action to serve process.

The same statute separately provides that qualifying private detectives and registered employees of certified private detective agencies may serve process in any Illinois county without special appointment.

One method involves authority granted by the court.

The other involves statutory authority associated with qualifying professional licensing or registration.

Understanding that distinction helps attorneys evaluate who will actually handle their service assignment.

The Investigative Advantage When an Address Fails

This is where the difference becomes practical.

A process server arrives at an address and learns the defendant moved six months ago.

What happens next?

A basic process service provider may simply report:

“Subject does not reside.”

That information may be accurate, but the attorney still has the same problem.

Where is the defendant?

Because Uthe Investigations & Process Service is also a Licensed Illinois Private Detective Agency, appropriate assignments can move from process service into professional investigative research.

Depending on the circumstances, available resources may include:

Skip tracing

Address research

Background investigations

Public-record research

Property research

Digital and social media investigations

Stationary surveillance

These resources allow us to approach difficult assignments strategically rather than endlessly repeating unsuccessful attempts.

Process Service Backed by Investigation

Our agency has developed several services specifically around this combination.

Alias Buster™

Alias Buster™ addresses assignments where the original service location may no longer be valid.

When appropriate, investigative research can help develop a more current location so the process service assignment can move forward.

Skip-to-Serve™

Skip-to-Serve™ combines professional locating resources with process service when the defendant’s current whereabouts need to be developed before service can occur.

Maximum Serve™

Maximum Serve™ is designed for particularly difficult service assignments that require greater planning, effort, and investigative judgment.

Maximum Experience. Maximum Effort. For Your Most Difficult Assignments.

These are not simply additional attempts.

They represent the advantage of having investigative resources available when conventional process service reaches an obstacle.

Professional Training Matters

Illinois also imposes training requirements on registered employees of private detective agencies.

Current law requires registered private detective agency employees to complete at least 20 hours of basic training within 30 days of employment. Beginning with the following calendar year, registered employees must complete at least 8 hours of annual training related to the work they perform.

That reinforces an important principle.

Professional process service should involve more than handing someone documents and sending them into the field.

Training, supervision, documentation, and agency procedures all contribute to professional service.

Better Documentation Helps Protect the Case

Process service sometimes becomes evidence.

A defendant may dispute where service occurred. Someone may challenge the identity of the person served. Abode service may be questioned. In other cases, the authority of the server itself may become relevant.

The affidavit or return then matters.

Our field personnel document what actually occurred. Our agency maintains oversight of the assignment and prepares appropriate service documentation based on the information developed in the field.

We do not believe an attorney should first discover weaknesses in the process service assignment when opposing counsel files a challenge.

Good process service should be built to withstand scrutiny from the beginning.

When Service Is Challenged

Even properly handled service can be challenged.

Illinois law allows objections to personal jurisdiction based upon insufficient process or insufficient service of process under 735 ILCS 5/2-301.

That makes professional documentation and proper authority particularly important.

Attorneys interested in this issue can review our Motion to Quash Service in Illinois resource for a more detailed discussion.

This also creates another natural internal link into the authority cluster we updated today.

One Agency for Process Service and Investigative Support

The greatest advantage of a Licensed Illinois Private Detective Agency is not simply the license itself.

It is what the professional structure allows the agency to provide.

An attorney may begin with a routine process service assignment.

Then the address fails.

The defendant becomes difficult to locate.

Background information needs verification.

A new location must be developed.

Or the circumstances require additional investigative work.

Instead of moving the matter between unrelated vendors, Uthe Investigations & Process Service can evaluate the problem and determine whether appropriate investigative resources may help.

Investigate. Locate. Serve. Document.

That is the Licensed Private Investigation Agency Advantage.

Why Attorneys Choose Uthe Investigations & Process Service

Since 1994, Uthe Investigations & Process Service LLC has combined professional investigation with process service.

Our clients receive more than someone willing to make an attempt.

They receive an experienced agency that manages the assignment, communicates with the client, documents field activity, and has investigative resources available when circumstances require more than routine service.

For attorneys, that means fewer disconnected vendors and greater accountability.

For difficult assignments, it means additional options.

For every assignment, it means knowing which professional agency stands behind the work.

Why Experience, Strategy and Local Knowledge Matter

Successfully serving legal documents requires far more than locating an address. Every assignment presents unique challenges, from secured apartment buildings and gated communities to rural properties, commercial facilities, universities, hospitals, and large industrial employers. Understanding how people live, work, and move throughout a community often determines whether a case is resolved on the first attempt or develops into a difficult service assignment. At Uthe Investigations & Process Service LLC, our decades of field experience allow us to develop practical service strategies based on the location, the type of property, and the circumstances surrounding each assignment. We recognize when a service attempt should occur before work, after business hours, on weekends, or when additional investigative techniques may be necessary to locate or identify the individual being served.

Local knowledge also means understanding the legal environment. We are familiar with Illinois process service laws, local court expectations, and the documentation attorneys rely upon when service is challenged. Our objective is not simply to complete service, but to complete it accurately, efficiently, and in a manner that withstands judicial scrutiny.

When routine service is unlikely to succeed, clients can also benefit from our Maximum Serve™, Skip-to-Serve, and Alias Buster™ programs, which combine investigative experience with strategic process service to help overcome difficult or evasive cases.

Attorneys, corporations, insurance carriers, government agencies, and property management companies often entrust us with sensitive matters involving confidential information, litigation strategy, and strict court deadlines. Our agency maintains the licensing, insurance, and operational standards expected of a professional investigative firm, providing clients with an experienced litigation support partner rather than simply a document delivery service.

This commitment to professionalism is part of The Uthe Advantage. Every assignment is managed with attention to detail, clear communication, and respect for client confidentiality. We understand that process service often represents only one component of a larger legal strategy, which is why we coordinate closely with our clients, provide timely status updates, and remain available to address questions throughout the assignment.

From initial submission through final affidavit, every stage of the assignment is electronically documented and professionally managed, giving clients complete visibility into the progress of their case.

Our commitment to convenience extends beyond successful service. Completed affidavits are delivered electronically for immediate use, and when matters are filed within our primary local service area and scheduling permits, our office can also file completed affidavits with the appropriate court and provide confirmation for your records. By combining secure technology with responsive personal service, we help simplify the litigation process while reducing administrative burdens on our clients.

Modern litigation support should be efficient, transparent, and easy to manage. Our digital process allows clients to spend less time tracking assignments and more time focusing on their cases, knowing their process service is being handled by an experienced team committed to professionalism, communication, and dependable results.

Comprehensive Litigation & Investigative Support

Successful litigation often requires more than timely process service. Locating individuals, verifying information, gathering intelligence, and responding to changing circumstances can all play an important role in moving a case forward. Rather than coordinating multiple service providers, clients benefit from working with a single licensed agency capable of delivering both professional process service and comprehensive investigative support.

As a Licensed Illinois Private Detective Agency, Uthe Investigations & Process Service offers a broad range of litigation support services that complement the legal process. In addition to statewide and nationwide process service, our agency provides skip tracing, background investigations, asset research, surveillance, social media investigations, cohabitation investigations, employer and education verifications, heir searches, and other investigative services designed to help attorneys, businesses, insurance professionals, landlords, and private clients make informed decisions throughout their cases.

By integrating these services within one agency, clients receive coordinated case management, consistent communication, and a single point of contact from the beginning of an assignment through final completion. Information developed during an investigation can immediately support process service efforts, while developments during process service may identify additional investigative opportunities. This coordinated approach improves efficiency, reduces unnecessary duplication, and helps ensure valuable information is shared across the assignment.

Every matter is different. Some cases require only professional process service, while others benefit from additional investigative resources. Our role is to evaluate each assignment, recommend appropriate solutions, and provide the level of support necessary to help clients achieve their objectives. Whether managing a straightforward service of process or coordinating multiple investigative services, our commitment remains the same: delivering professional litigation support through experience, communication, and dependable results.

Comprehensive Investigative Support for Complex Assignments

While many process service assignments are completed through routine service attempts, some matters require additional investigative resources. Defendants may relocate, maintain irregular schedules, travel frequently, or otherwise become difficult to locate. In these situations, Uthe Investigations & Process Service offers a range of investigative services designed to support successful service while helping clients make informed decisions throughout the process.

As a licensed Illinois private detective agency, we can seamlessly integrate investigative services into an active process service assignment when appropriate. Depending on the circumstances, this may include advanced skip tracing, Skip-to-Serve™, Maximum Serve™, discreet surveillance, occupancy verification, asset research, or other investigative techniques that provide additional insight into a difficult case. Alias Buster™ combines process service with investigative skip tracing when an address proves inaccurate or outdated. Because these services are managed within the same agency, clients benefit from consistent communication, coordinated case management, and a single point of contact throughout the assignment.

We also recognize that our clients often possess valuable information that can contribute to a successful outcome. Employment schedules, upcoming court appearances, known travel plans, vehicle information, or knowledge that a defendant is expected to be at a particular location on a specific day and time can all help shape an effective service plan. By combining our investigative experience with the information provided by our clients, we are often able to develop opportunities that might otherwise be missed.

Every assignment is evaluated on its own merits. Rather than applying the same approach to every case, we recommend additional investigative services only when they are likely to provide meaningful value. This measured, collaborative approach allows us to deliver professional litigation support tailored to the unique circumstances of each assignment while maintaining the discretion, communication, and professionalism our clients expect.

When Experience Makes the Difference

Every legal matter represents an investment of time, resources, and professional responsibility. Whether handling complex commercial litigation, family law matters, insurance claims, landlord disputes, or corporate collections, clients deserve a process service partner who understands that successful service is often critical to keeping a case moving forward. Delays, unsuccessful service, or preventable procedural issues can increase costs, disrupt schedules, and create unnecessary frustration.

At Uthe Investigations & Process Service, experience influences every assignment we accept. Before documents ever leave our office, we evaluate the available information, identify potential challenges, and determine whether additional investigative resources or specialized service options may improve the likelihood of success. This proactive approach helps us recommend solutions that are appropriate for the unique circumstances of each case rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all process.

Some assignments require only routine service, while others benefit from enhanced services such as Maximum Serve™, Alias Buster™, Skip-to-Serve™, advanced skip tracing, surveillance, or coordinated investigative support. By offering these premium solutions within the same licensed agency, we help clients respond to challenges quickly while maintaining continuity, communication, and accountability throughout the assignment.

Our clients understand that they are not simply purchasing process service—they are investing in the successful progression of their case. By combining professional judgment, investigative experience, premium service options, and responsive communication, we help protect that investment while delivering the level of service expected from a licensed Illinois private detective agency.

When experience makes the difference, our objective is simple: deliver dependable results, minimize unnecessary delays, and provide the confidence that comes from working with a trusted litigation support partner.
